DU players and doubles partners James Davis and Matt Summers quickly set the winning tone for the day with a 6-0 win at #1 doubles. After watching their match audience member and DU student, Molly Bocock raved,
“I have never seen a duo work so well together. They really were in sync which made it really fun to watch.”
This was followed by Pedro Fernandez del Valle and Mattia Ros’s victory which was a 6-4 win at #2 doubles. To start the match-up off was the three singles matches. James Davis, #3 singles for the Pioneers was one of the three singles that secured a win.
Davis took the court ready to win. He missed his first serve but the second was in bounds and generated a rally that ended in Davis forcing his opponent to hit it out of play. This pace continued and Davis got up 4-0. However, Utah hit back with a ace that gave them their only point in the set. After Utah’s ace, Davis went on to score to more, completing the set with a win of 6-1.
In both the first and second set, Davis won 6-1 over Utah. However, the second set was much more tense and Davis with the initial serve got down over his opponent 0-1. After the quick shake up, Davis recomposed his play and quickly bounced back with multiple back-to-back aces bring the score of the match up to 4-1.
His next points came easier as they all were earned off of quick rally’s and Utah never had a chance to take the lead. When James was asked after the set to reflect on his performance he said,
“that was a fun match, both sets I felt confident and I held onto my leads. I played to his back hand which seemed to be weaker which is why I think I did so well.”
James was not the only one who found success against their opponent. Number 5 singles Ignacio Rivero Crespo defeated his opponent 6-2 in both sets as well.
When asked about his performance he stated “Utah has a strong team so I was nervous going into my match but I quickly took the lead and set the pace of the set which helped me come out on top.”
Denver’s session thus far is undefeated and they hope to channel this energy into their upcoming matchup against Utah again on Thursday the 13th.
